At JW Marriott Island Resort, our design is a tribute to the natural beauty of the Maldives, seamlessly blending authentic local culture with refined luxury.
Rooted in the philosophy of the “Maldivian Feeling,” the resort strikes a balance between genuine island charm and the elegance of a high-end retreat. Our vision was shaped by the concept of “home.” In the post-pandemic era, the meaning of home has evolved, with people seeking comfort, familiarity, and emotional well-being in their surroundings. This inspired us to craft spaces that reflect the laid-back essence of Maldivian island life, while elevating the experience with contemporary comforts.
Beyond guest experiences, we also considered the well-being of the associates, who call the island home. Their deep-rooted connection to island living influenced our approach, ensuring that the resort fosters a sense of belonging, peace, and balance for both guests and team members alike. By incorporating traditional Maldivian elements—from the simplicity of island life to design touches inspired by local craftsmanship—we created a resort where guests can immerse themselves in the authentic Maldivian way of life, while indulging in modern luxury. The result is a sanctuary that feels both inviting and transformative, where every detail has been thoughtfully curated to evoke a profound sense of relaxation and escape.
The private island setting served as the foundation for its architectural vision, seamlessly blending luxury with the natural beauty of the Maldives. Every design decision was guided by a commitment to preserving the island’s natural integrity while crafting an immersive, refined guest experience.
At the heart of the resort’s design lies a deep appreciation for Maldivian heritage, particularly the traditional Gedhoru—the classic Maldivian hut. These structures, with their steeply pitched roofs, are not only aesthetically striking but also functionally designed to withstand tropical rains and enhance natural ventilation. This architectural language creates an atmosphere of lightness and openness, reinforcing the resort’s connection to its surroundings.
The resort’s architectural details celebrate the artistry of Maldivian craftsmanship. Grand entrance columns, reminiscent of traditional hand-carved structures, establish a sense of place, with similar motifs echoed in bar counters, walkways, and villa interiors. Every element—whether structural or decorative—was purposefully crafted to foster a sense of continuity and harmony throughout the resort.
The color palette is a tribute to traditional Maldivian artistry, incorporating the earth tones found in handcrafted baskets and pottery. Combined with natural textures like wood and stone, the design creates a tactile, immersive experience that connects guests to both the local culture and the pristine island landscape.
